Silent killers
Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost, or discarded at sea.
They are a major form of marine pollution and are sometimes referred to as "silent killers" because they continue to trap and kill marine life, a process known as "ghost fishing", long after they have been lost.
It is estimated that 650,000 marine animals die from ghost nets each year. Beyond harming wildlife, these nets become entangled in coral reefs, damaging them and blocking vital sunlight. Ghost nets make up 46% of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Some nets are being recycled into products such as rugs, clothing, and sunglasses.
Design process
These images are part of the design process. Using sailors’ knots as a metaphor, I’m exploring the relationships between emotions and ghost nets: how feelings, like nets, can tangle, hold and trap long after they’ve been let go.
